Borax Museum & Aerial Acres
This trip will be led by Tyrone LaFay (VGMS). 909-802-9177 biotribecascadia@yahoo.com We will be meeting at the Borax Visitor Center (14486 Borax Road, Boron, CA. 93516) at 9am sharp at opening. We will spend 1.5 hours here until 10:30am before heading to the Aerial Acres site to dig for Travertine. The site is a good distance away from any concessions, so remember to bring plenty of water and snacks. The Borax Visitor Center offers an opportunity to explore U.S. Borax’s 150-year history as an American icon and learn about mining today and innovations for tomorrow, including historical and geological exhibits. Feel free to visit their website to learn more: www.borax.com/about/community/borax-visitor-center The Travertine Onyx site (Aerial Acres) will require some digging in the sandy ground. You should bring along both a long handle and a short handle shovel. A digging bar could prove helpful if you have one in order to help break out the Travertine from the strata it is found in. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, however a high clearance vehicle is highly recommended since there can be some heavy rutting in the roads. Bring along: Good sturdy shoes, long sleeves, plenty of water, sunblock, good coverage hat, rock hammer, collecting bag or bucket, and plenty of energy!
